Visit to Papa Fernandez

In earlier trip South of San Felipe, we covered our trip from El Dorado Ranch San Felipe to Alfonsina. From Alfonsina, he headed back to El Dorado Ranch. Just a little further South is another interesting settlement - Papa Fernandez.

Papa Fernandez is a place and a restaurant, South of San Felipe, Mexico. There is camping, boat launch ramps and a restaurant. Papa Fernandez is situated on Bahia San Luis Gonzaga, just north of the military check point and about 2 miles from Alfonsina`s. You can`t miss the signs right by the freeway letting you know you`ve arrived at Papa Fernandez.

The place was developed in the 50`s as a fishing camp. About 1958 the restaurant opened near where the present eatery is located.

Papa passed in 2001. The operation is overseen by Papa`s son Chi Chi.

Papa Fernandez Restaurant

At the restaurant we met Chiyo, grand daughter and Melisa, great-grand daughter, along with a daughter in law. All were very pleasant and go out of their way to ensure tourists and guests have a great time.

They are open 7 days from 8 to 8. If no one is in the restaurant, go around the building and make some noise. Those friendly, helpful ladies will come and take care of you.

We had the combination especial which includes chiles relleno, taco and enchilada. The relleno was so good we ordered 3 orders to go. We also had the delicious shrimp ranchero. The food was, of course, especially made for us. The fish and shrimp are fresh from local waters. They serve no alcohol, so byob. Payment is cash only.

They can seat about 25 inside and maybe 30 outside. The interior of the restaurant has memorabilia from Papa`s life. A photo with John Wayne is prominent as are 2 sets of horns from deer and mountain sheep. There is a photo of Papa, Chi Chi and famous baja fisherman Tony Reyes.
